Until the large deposits of Amethyst crystal were discovered in Brazil in the 1700s, Amethyst was considered one of the five cardinal gemstones, the most expensive, along with Diamond Ruby Sapphire and Emerald. Quite suddenly, back then, the value of the gemstone dropped, and it became semi-precious.
It is, however, still a beautiful gemstone. The Zambian Amethyst is known for having a deeper colour than Amethyst of other sources.
