Cabochon is a French word meaning round cut, without facets. Nowadays, with precision machining, it is more common to see gemstones facetted, but the cabochon cut gives a gemstone a charm, a softness, even a sense of mystery, for the colour of the gemstone is less obvious when it is cut en cabochon, it requires a second look.
The above 8x6mm Garnet Cabochon is an excellent example of its type, of a deep wine-red colour, naturally included but not heavily, indeed quite transparent.
