Precious Keshi Pearl is a Pearl created by a mollusc without a nucleus, consisting entirely, 100%, of nacre, the substance the mollusc normally produces to cover an irritant, some pebble or piece of shell or whatever that has snuck into the innards of the mollusc that the mollusc wants to isolate.
Back in the early days of the Japanese Pearl cultivation industry, in the mid 1900s, it was found, when a mollusc rejected an introduced irritant, a nucleus, usually in those days a sphere of mother-of-pearl, that sometimes the mollusc would continue to secrete nacre anyway, resulting in smallish, baroque-shaped pure Pearl, usually of high lustre and harder than “normal” cultivated Pearl.
This type of rare, fine baroque non-nucleated Pearl was given the name “Poppy”, Keshi in Japanese.
Nowadays Keshi Pearl is also produced in China, but the Chinese version tends to be quite white, where the Japanese Keshi possesses, as can be seen in the above, a silvery sheen; and the Japanese Keshi is said to said to have a consistently higher lustre.
