Superb Green Peridot: Peridot is one of the very few gemstones that only come in one colour, from light yellowish green to darkish pure green, depending on the content of iron in the crystal structure. The above matched gemstones are not of the darkish pure green, which is very, very rare, but are of an AGrade olive green, also rare, and quite costly, with very little yellow to the tone.
Peridot is actually rare and has been confused throughout the ages with umpteen different gemstones. First noted as being mined on a Red Sea island around 300bc, initially called Topaz because one of the island’s names was Topazios, its main source these days is said to be an Indian reservation in Arizona.
However, when this matched pair was purchased back in the early 1980s in Jaipur Rajasthan, where they were cut, their source was said to be St John’s Island in the Red Sea, the original Egyptian Topazios, now called Zabargad, still commercially producing Peridot from the abundance of the rock Peridotite.
