Superior Cabochon Garnet gemstone, 10mm x 8mm oval origin India, of a fine translucent wine-red.
This is a nice gemstone in its colour, or rather, colours; front-on it is a dark red, a side view brings a sharp orange-red, and when held up against the light its red is almost russet. Very attractive, and the cabochon cut of the gemstone contains a mystery and a depth lost in the flash and sharpness of the facet cut.

The Garnet Crystal family is large and complex. The above Superior Cabochon Garnet is of the Almandine variety, always in shades of wine-red, but there exist also green Garnets (Demantoid), bright orange Garnets (Spessartite), pink Garnet (Rhodolite), and quite a few other varieties.
By far the most well-known Garnet type, historically and presently, is the above wine-red Almandine.
