Amethyst Cabochon, 10mm round, a fine natural translucent gemstone of the Quartz Crystal family. Other gemstones of the Quartz Crystal family include Citrine, Pink or Rose, Smokey, and clear Quartz, commonly called Rock Crystal, the material of the medieval soothsayer’s “crystal ball”.
The origin of the above fine Amethyst Cabochon is Brazil. The above Sydney-handmade ring setting for this Amethyst Cabochon is year 2026 work, but the gemstone itself comes from a small packet of this lovely lilac gemstone, all of cabochon cut, sourced in Jaipur Rajasthan back in the 1980s. Jaipur was, and still is, one of the main gem-cutting centres of India. Rajasthani traders bought the Amethyst crystal rough in Brazil and shipped it to Jaipur where it would be cut into gemstones, facetted and cabochon, in one of the many gem-houses of that city.
Though Amethyst quartz can be sourced from various regions of the world, Brazil still counts as one of the major world sources for this much-admired gemstone.
