This Celtic Knot ring design was created in Sydney, hand-carved in Silver, a commission of Christopher William, some years back, to a talented Sydney bench jeweller. This sort of creative metal work is a dying art in regions of high labour costs such as Australia. Nowadays drawings would be presented to a business with Computer Assisted Design (CAD) machinery. The drawings would not need to be particularly good, or even exact, though it helps to designate thicknesses and proportions; the graphics technician gets to work and produces 3-D images until everyone is happy.
The approved images are then fed into the machine and the approved design blasted out of a solid metal block. It then needs to be tidied up.
This machinery is quite expensive, and the cost of production reflects that; however, it is still less costly than that of an item totally handcrafted in a city such as Sydney.
