SOLD. Rare Mughal Silver Rupee coin pendant, North India 1500s under Akbar the Great, very high Silver content (approx 95%), one tolah in weight (the tolah is an ancient Indian standard weight, approx 11.66grams). The coin is 18mm square, 3.5mm thickness, in very good condition considering it is over 500 years old and has been much worn.

Coinage such as this, of high Silver content and standard weight, helped create the stable strong economy of the Mughal Empire under Akbar; the East India Company and the British Raj, successors in India to the Mughals, reaped the benefits of continuing this practice by minting their own Rupee coin of high Silver content and standard one tolah weight.
(Price pendant alone.)
