Kazakhstan Turquoise and Afghanistan Lapis Lazuli, displaying the two blue colours of the two gemstone rocks, Turquoise and Lapis. The Lapis Lazuli mines have operated in the far north-east region of Afghanistan since antiquity; Turquoise has been mined in Kazakhstan since the early 2010s, when deposits were discovered in a central mountain range of that country.
Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzistan separate Afghanistan from Kazakhstan, and while a considerable distance separates them, yet are they Central Asian neighbours.
The lovely pale blue of the Kazakhstan Turquoise is typical of the shades of sky blue obtained in the Turquoise gemstone of that recently discovered source.

Note: in the gemstone world most gemstones are crystalline, a handful are non-crystalline “organics”, and two are considered “rocks”: Turquoise and Lapis Lazuli. Pairing the two gemstone rocks in jewellery is fun, especially where the gemstone quality is high, as is the case in the above pendant, handmade in Sydney especially for them.
Note also that the above gemstones are natural and untreated.  A certain normal care is required in how fine natural Turquoise is treated, for Turquoise is a porous gemstone and can be blotched by exposure to the chemicals in, for example, perfumes/suntan lotions etc. And giving the Turquoise a swab with a damp cloth after wear helps remove any accretions of body oils.
