Elegant Tribal Silver pendant, an old handcrafted piece from around a century ago, said to have its origins in the Himalayan foothills of north-west India, in the state of Himachel Pradesh.
The basic element of this Tribal Silver pendant is a six-segment melon form 16mm long, 14mm thick, of solid Silver; the bottom of this solid Silver ovoid is given over to a fluidly curving mass of Silver granulations, contained all the way around within a border of fixed twisted wire. The front is designated with a leaf and stem motif, the leaf “bead”-set with red glass.
The mass of Silver granules, a defining element of the above Elegant Tribal Silver pendant, is a wonder in itself: the granules all move; each granule has a wire filament attached, which is securely twist-wired onto one of the many small rings soldered to the bottom of the melon form, the granules so tightly serried as to appear solid; yet press upon the mass with finger or finger nail and each one moves.
High Silver content, almost certainly created using melted down British Raj Silver Rupee coins, of 91.6% Silver purity. This piece would have been created for and worn by, a person of high standing in their community.
