Best Wine-Red Garnet, faceted 8mm round; rare AGrade quality, top colour for this Almandine variety of the extensive and complex Garnet crystal family. This gemstone is old stock, mined in India and cut in Jaipur back in the 1980s, when Almandine Garnet of this Best Wine-Red colour was much less uncommon than it is today. India has been the major world supplier of this type of red Garnet for many decades, but in the last two decades it has gradually become more difficult to source the best grades, until now, in 2025, it has become almost impossible.
In Sydney and Bangkok one is offered quality that, when compared to the quality of the above gemstone, can best be described as “murky”, and, compared to the liveliness of the above gemstone, almost “dead”. In India itself this sort of AGrade quality can still be found, but discerning Indians want this quality, and the price has jumped commensurate with this internal demand. In consequence, the gemstone dealers of the world buy the lesser qualities.
The 9ct Gold pendant, crafted in Sydney for the above gemstone (almost 2 grams of solid 9ct Yellow Gold), has been twice holed to allow the chain to pass directly through, a work bench task much more difficult and painstaking to get right and clean than simply soldering a ring to the top.
