Antique Silver Curb link bracelet of long and short curbs, very solid chain handcrafted link by link over 100 years ago, almost certainly in Birmingham, dubbed “Silver City” for the huge amounts of Silver chain its workshops handmade and supplied to the increasingly well-off citizenry of industrial colonial England.
Every curb link, short and long, is stamped with the Lion Passant, the English mark for Silver, indicating 925 Silver purity.
A considerable part of the Silver jewellery produced in Birmingham in the Victorian era and just beyond, consisted of chain for watch fob chains, to secure the valuable watch of a gentleman, connecting it from the vest pocket, where it rested, to a vest button hole, and most of the Silver watch fob chains produced were of the curb link variety.
Bracelets, however, were not produced, only fob chains for watches. The above Antique Silver Curb link chain is an intact length, in excellent condition despite it having had considerable wear, evidenced by the rub of the Silver mark on each link. It has been modified to a bracelet in Sydney, using a new but completely traditional Silver swivel clasp.
