This cabochon 1.97ct Plush Ruby is a “Star” Ruby, an opaque Ruby gemstone cabochon cut in such a way as to bring out the “Star” effect, a six-ray Star quite distinct under sunlight or pin-point light, which plays across the surface of the Ruby, following the light source. This Star is permanent and will not be diminished over time and wear, for not only is the gemstone Ruby material, one of the toughest crystals on earth, it is also cut cabochon, with no facets to nick. Cabochon Ruby is extremely difficult to damage.
The sister gemstone of Ruby is Sapphire which, when opaque, can also be cut to produce the six-arm Star, but the Star Sapphire is considerably more rare than the Star Ruby, considerably more costly, and when found is usually not obviously blue, or bluish, but rather of a lovely soft grey, with perhaps just the hint of a bluish tinge.
