Vintage Gold Ring, Polished Quartz. The above is an excellent example of the English Gold dress ring of the post-WWII decade: well-made, hand-made, of solid 9ct Gold, a four-claw ring to showcase an eye-catching, large, well-cut gemstone, a not-too-expensive gemstone but large and real and attractive.
The translucent polished Quartz gemstone in the above Vintage Gold Ring is particularly attractive, for it has a light smokey colour with hints of purple, very pleasant to the eye.
The ring is in very good condition, especially considering it was handmade sixty-odd years ago. If it had ever been worn, it was not worn much, for the gemstone’s side facets show no nicks; the hardness of Quartz Crystal is considered a benchmark of gemstone hardness, anything less hard, or tough, being considered less than durable, anything harder being seriously durable, but with wear and knocks the side facets of a large Quartz gemstone such as the above will normally show some sort of wear; this gemstone is pretty well impeccable.
The weight of the 20mm x 15mm x9mm Polished Quartz gemstone is 6.3ct or 1.25 grams. The weight of the 9ct Gold used in the hand-making of the above Vintage Gold Ring is 6.95 grams. A formless 6.95 gram lump of 9ct Gold as of beginning 2026 with fetch around $535. Note: an experienced bench jeweller wishing to create a pendant, say, or a ring, and starting with a 6.95 gram lump of 9ct Gold, will finish with an end product that weighs around 6.4 grams; over 7% of the weight will be lost in the making, through unavoidable wastage and through the final polishing process.
