Simplest Knot Ring, handcrafted in Sydney using two lengths of 1.5mm thick round 9ct Gold wire, a simple enough job but one requiring good technique and concentration to arrive at a cleanly-crafted look.
Knots as decorations are as old as fire building, and have always been used as symbols of attachment; the Victorian English, with their love of designs that sent a message, created in Gold and in Silver “knot” rings of wondrous complexity, and all crafted entirely by hand.
The above “Simplest Knot Ring” weighs 3.4 grams.
Interesting to note that when a bench jeweller sets out to make a 3.4 gram 9ct Gold ring such as the above, the task must begin with at least 4 grams of the precious metal on the bench, and it will be earnestly hoped that when the task is completed and the ring finished, there will be some Gold left on the bench, in scraps and filings, preferably at least 0.3 grams of the costly metal, for the standard in the jewellery industry is approx 10% metal wastage in the making of an item.
