Multi Strand Antique Silver bracelet, English 1880s, originally a Victorian lady’s watch fob chain, or Albertina, the lady’s equivalent to the Albert: a chain connecting a part of clothing, e.g. a button hole, to a valuable watch which could be put in a pocket, making losing the watch more difficult.
Ladies’ Albertinas were always considerably more ornate than Alberts, usually created with two or three chains, an engraved slider through which the chains thread, and a tassel, along with the usual bar and swivel clasp.
This particular Multi Strand Antique Silver Albertina is in very good condition, everything in good working order, the chains all intact. The clasp has been replaced with another old English Silver clasp, from the early 1900s. After decades of wear, the spring in the original clasp would have either given up altogether, or become a little too loose for safe wear.
