Lapis Pendant, buff-polished half ovoid cut, very fine deep blue natural untreated colour of the intensity known as ultramarine, with some natural inclusion flecks of pyrites. This is the sort of quality seen in Gold jewellery in high-end shops in London and New York.
There are only two countries commercially producing Lapis Lazuli: Afghanistan and Chile. The Chilean deposits were discovered in the late 1800s; the Afghanistan deposits have supplied the ancient world for thousands of years. Whereas the Chilean mines rarely produce the natural ultramarine quality of the above Lapis Pendant, the Badakhshan region of N.E.Afghanistan regularly throws up this sort of quality, along with lots of material not so AGrade.

(A half decade ago, in the centre of Kabul the government ran a Lapis Lazuli grading facility, and during opening hours one could wander room to room examining large open safes, each full of rough Lapis Lazuli rock segments of one of the grades, judged on the government experts’ opinion of likely colour when cut, and likely purity, i.e. freedom from inclusions, especially of calcite.)
