Fancy 9ct Gold English Antique Albert chain. In the parlance of the English Antique trade, any Albert chain in a link other than the standard “curb” link is considered “fancy”, even if it is simply a longish link interspersed with smaller oval links. The link, however, on the above chain, joining the long links, is properly “fancy”, and is most time-consuming to execute.
Often enough these Albert chains were created for quite thin people, and obviously the length of chain required to reach from the fob pocket to the vest button hole was less than that required for a stout customer. It could reasonably be surmised that that was the case with the above Albert chain, for when it was purchased in the south of England it was simply too short to be useful as a necklace; thus the extra linkage at each end of the above chain, of simple oval linkage handcrafted in Sydney, elegant and suitable.
