Design Arts’n’Crafts 9ct Gold chain. The English Arts and Crafts movement started in the late 1800s, in reaction to what was perceived to be an over-reliance on machine-made product and the ugliness of England’s industrialized centres of mass production at the time. The Arts and Crafts movement sought to encourage handcraftsmanship, and the designs created by its adherents are still, over a century later, highly appreciated and often copied; such is the case with the above handmade 9ct Gold chain.
Nelson Dawson, one of the founders of the movement, produced umpteen chain link designs; this is probably among them. A simple, clever linkage, each link is one length of 0.5mm round 9ct Gold wire crossed over to create a figure-of-eight, the ends turned to hook in the centre and soldered there in place. It is work that can only be done by hand, and to be effective it must be done most neatly and cleanly.
