Antique Japanaiserie English Silver & Gold Locket handcrafted circa 1880 during a period of growing awareness & appreciation of Oriental art and culture, an awareness particularly focused on Japan and China.
This locket entirely handcrafted, very finely hand-engraved, not only in the gold-framed vignette of the courtesan plucking her instrument by the shore, but in the superb handwork in two corners of the face of the locket.
Intact, in excellent condition, 58mm total pendant length, locket 28x42mm dimensions, depth 6mm; hinge in good working condition, interior complete with the original two silver flanges.
