6mm Black “Star” Sapphire, a very Australian gemstone, from the Anakie Sapphire fields of central Queensland, virtually the only source of this dark opaque Sapphire material that can be cut cabochon in such a way as to bring out on the gemstone surface the six-point “Star”, or asterism, a permanent feature, which moves across the surface depending on the source of light.
The cabochon must have a certain roundness to it, for if it is cut flattish it will display only a diffused golden play of colour, without the distinctive “Star”.
The Sydney designing of the above ring setting is based on an original, less sturdy ring out of England in the 1930s, but the basic elements of the design, namely the solitaire bezel setting and the ornament of two bars on the band up close to the setting, goes back at least two thousand years, to pure Gold gemstone rings of the early Roman Empire.
Note: 2.8 grams of solid 9ct Gold in the making of the ring setting for the above 6mm Black “Star”. That makes the discounted $440 of this ring, which includes GST, a very reasonable price in this period of elevated world Gold prices (as of April 2025).
