69cms 9ct Gold Chain, English Antique. Pre-WW1, probably dating to the early 1900s. After the Great War a very great number of craftsmen failed to return and all trades were affected by a lack of workers and skills, bench jewellery one of them. Work such as that involved in the handcrafting of the above chain became quite uncommon.
The creation of the above 9ct Gold chain required work that was tedious and time-consuming. It requires a high level of diligence to produce by hand a neatly crafted uniform 3mm linkage that is quite clean, free of signs of the constant solderings it entails.
Each link consists of two of the 3mm links soldered together, and then each of those soldered together, one after another, work that can only be done by hand, meticulously. Small wonder work such as this became uncommon. In these days no bench jeweller capable of such clean work will contemplate the work and tediousness of making such a chain.
