Antique Match container, English hallmarked in Birmingham in year 1907, handmade as a container/striker for phosphorous matches, a type of readily ignited match that was banned in England only a few years after 1907 but not banned in America for another decade.
This type of match container was known as a Vesta after the Ancient Roman goddess of fire.
Strong hinge and closure, as was required of Vestas, making it a very secure little container for precious smalls.
43mm round, depth 7mm, lovely patina, very satisfying to handle.

SOLD. Antique Match container pendant, an English Silver container-cum-striker for phosphorus matches, this excellent example was hallmarked in Birmingham in the year 1907, not long before this type of match was banned in England but quite some time before its banning in America.
