Translucent Emerald pebbles. Emerald belongs in the Beryl Crystal family, along with Aquamarine and the pink gemstone Beryl, Morganite, and is one of the most rare gemstones on earth. It is also one of the most problematic of gemstones because of the characteristic abundance of naturally occurring inclusions, a characteristic given, in gemmological parlance, the French name of “jardin”, garden; problematic in that the inclusions can cause fracture lines. All professional gemstone setters will have experienced the fracture of an Emerald in the attempted setting: the fracture line at the corner edge of the gemstone and the pressure in the pushing over of metal just a touch too much.
That said, this is a problem occurring more in small Emerald gemstones; in larger gemstones the gemstone cutter will have more to work with and usually fracture lines can be kept well away from edges if not entirely obviated.
Naturally, in the case of the above Translucent Emerald pebbles, there are no edges and all is smooth. Both gemstones are quite heavily included but are both of excellent deep Emerald green, truly beautiful and unmistakably natural untreated Emerald.
