The term “neo-classical” refers to the revival in the 1800s of the forms and processes of the Ancient World, specifically of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome.
Archeological excavations (and simple digging in fields) brought to light at that time many ancient treasures. The goldsmith House of Castellani in the early part of the 1800s, in Rome and Naples, not only sold antiquities but in its workshops re-created the look of the unearthed treasures of Ancient Greece and Rome, and in time, after much experimentation, reproduced the ancient art of granulation, an art long lost to Europe.

Jewellery houses such as the Castellani and that of Carlo Giuliano in London -Giuliano had worked for the Castellani in Italy before locating to London- had immense influence over European jewellery design throughout the 1800s and beyond.
