Small AGrade Emerald, 2.65mm cut round, .07ct weight. Emerald is a rare precious gemstone, and the larger the cut gemstone the more rare, and, naturally, the more costly.
In the grading of Emerald by gemstone dealers weight and size, neatness of cut, colour and translucency are the main criteria. Where the gemstone has a certain size, say .5ct and greater, and so long as its colour is properly Emerald green and it is not so heavily included as to negatively impact its translucency, its size becomes more and more the driver of its costliness.
Smaller gemstones, such as the above Small AGrade Emerald, are judged almost purely on colour and translucency. The above little Emerald sits in the top so-called “AGrade Commercial” gradings, of clear bright strong Emerald green colour, clean of face and nicely translucent.
The 9ct Gold pendant setting for this lovely small gemstone is created in Sydney from the design of a family of jewellers of Yemen origin, transplanted from the Yemen to Haifa, Israel, via an airborn exodus in the 1950s, some younger of which family came to Sydney in the 1980s for a Trade Fair.
