Antique Tibetan Amber centre-bead, “butterscotch” colour, flanked by two deep honey-coloured old Tribal Naga Amber beads, with spacers of old Afghani Tribal Silver, strung on a 46cms Silver chain.
The Antique Tibetan Amber “butterscotch” has its source in the Baltic Sea region of Northern Europe, whereas the flanking Naga Amber comes from the Sea of Bengal, and is sometimes referred to as Burmese Amber. Baltic Amber comes in both the translucent honey colour and the opaque yellow. When opaque yellow Amber was introduced into Tibet by traders in the 19th.century, Tibetans took to it and never bothered with the honey-coloured variety.
Amber from the Bay of Bengal seems to come only in the deep honey colour. One particular tribal area of Nagaland greatly valued this honey-coloured Amber and created quite bold necklaces of it, of large flat-sided, tapered, rounded centre beads, flanked with tubular beads graduating in size down to the size of the two Naga Amber beads in the above necklace.
