Modern Ancient, Necklace of Gold and Silver and Titanium, the pendant designed and crafted in Sydney by a master jeweller. The Titanium plate, with its cut-out lines, triangles and circles, shaped to fit exactly upon the handcut Silver backing plate, is held in place by the rivets of the solid 9ct Gold Scarab and the solid 9ct Gold 2.7mm round bead below it.
The piece has an extremely modern “Star Wars” look about it, and no doubt the cut-outs of the Titanium plate reinforce this feel, however, the basic form of this pendant, hemispheric with a smaller hemisphere centrally flat upon the upper edge, could easily have originated in Ancient Egypt’s Middle Kingdom.
Note how the bail for its chain is fixed behind the top of the Scarab head, hidden, making for a very particular simplicity of line in its hang.
There have been a number of Sydney jewellers attracted to the forms and symbols revealed in excavations of Ancient Egypt sites, and especially to the Scarab symbol; this Scarab design is one of the better ones around.
