Tribal Stylish, old Silver earrings from Gujerat West India, completely handcrafted around mid-1900s, fashioned out of one piece of beaten Silver, from the bottom of the flare to the very tip of the earhook, with the granule fineal of the flare and the most finely worked wire-work of the earring neck added later.
Gujerat has Ancient History, back five thousand years to the Indus Valley Civilization and beyond. It lies on the west coast of India, on the Arabian Sea, Bombay to the south, Pakistan to the north, with a pair of great gulfs thrusting into it and the fantastic Rann of Kutchh interfacing with Pakistan. It is quite fertile, has supported numerous mighty kingdoms and large thriving peasant farming communities of various Tribal affiliations. Silver has always played a prominent part in the peasant farming communities of India, being both an element of prestige and a store of wealth; Gujerat is exceptional in its Tribal Silver jewellery, for not only is it consistently crafted in Silver of high Silver content, it also very often takes a form that in the Western eyes of today presents as modern, smart, contemporary.
