Tribal Pashtun Coin pendant. This Silver Indian Rupee coin was wildly transformed in Waziristan, now a Pakistan province bordering Afghanistan. The George V King & Emperor Silver rupee was minted in India, with very minor variations, from 1912 through to 1936. The date on this coin is obliterated but is probably 1919.
Ethnically, the Pashtuns of Waziristan are the same as the Pashtuns on the other side of the Afghani border, the line of the border following the contours of river valleys with scant reference to ancient ethnicities, the line created by the British around the mid-1800s and agreed to by the Afghanistan kingdom of the day.
The border was controversial in its inception and remains so today. It is, naturally, highly porous. The whole border area is intensely tribal.
