Triangular Moroccan Silver and Enamel pendant. This type of Moroccan enamelled Silver-work is an ancient Berber tradition focused on the Berber stronghold of the Anti Atlas Range of mountains running south-west from central Morocco almost to the Atlantic. The pendant above is typical in its enamel colours and in its simple strong form. It has some age, probably dating back to around the mid 1900s.
The tradition of this Silver and enamel work continues, mostly in the coastal town of Tiznit, not far from where the Anti Atlas peters out, the only difference, really, being the brighter colours of the modern enamelling.
The bail for a chain, at the top, has been added in Sydney. It is possible that this piece was not originally a pendant, but rather the bottom articulated section of a pair of elaborate earring drops.
Note: the 55cms 1.5mm thick Silver “box” chain shown in above images normally retails for just under $40, but is reduced to $30 if taken with the pendant.
