Solid White Opal, .40ct weight, 7.7mm x 5.8mm oval dimensions, with strong, predominantly green flash of colour, better in reality than this amateur photographer has captured.
In gemstone Opal, “Play of Colour” describes the extent of the colour play across the surface of the gemstone, and whether or not there exist significant gaps where no colour can be seen. If a grade of 1 to 10 in “Play of Colour” is assigned to the above Solid White Opal, 10 being excellent, where the colours are scintillating nicely across the entire surface of the gemstone, then the above gemstone would warrant a grade of 7 to 8. It is an attractive sample of an Australian White Opal, with bright sharp green and a decent colour play. Origin Coober Pedy, Sth Australia.
Solid White Opal means simply that, that the gemstone is solid through, not a “doublet” or “triplet”. ( A “doublet” is where a sliver of the costly Opal is bonded to a backing of, say, ironstone; a “triplet” has the addition of a transparent capping, quartz or resin, to protect the Opal surface and/or enhance colour.)
The Solid White Opal is flanked by two natural white half-Pearls, costly little gemstones but lovely complimenting the White Opal.
Ring design is very simple, straight-forward, handcrafted solidly in Sydney for the three gemstones. The last image in the above image gallery, of the underside of the setting, shows just how solidly this ring has been created.
