Smart Tribal Silver. The old Tribal Silver tubular bead was handcrafted at least three-quarters of a century ago in India’s most northerly state, Himachel Pradesh, a mountainous area bordered by Kashmir, Ladakh and a Tibetan Region to the north. It is one of India’s more progressive states, with high literacy rates; its population is made up of quite a number of tribal affiliations, a result no doubt of umpteen peoples over many millennia crossing it en route south and considering it attractive enough to stay. The British when they controlled India liked the region enough to choose one of its towns, Simla, as their summer capital.
Tribal Silver from Himachel Pradesh is almost always of very high Silver content and often stylistically different, as is the case with the old bead in the Smart Tribal Silver necklet above: of high Silver content and simple, modernistic cylindrical form, it is also very finely hand-worked, its surface meticulously wrapped with hammered twisted Silver wire.
The 3.5mm square profile neoprene length is capped with cleanly-crafted Silver. The old Silver bead can be removed; another large-holed bead can be used in its place, or the black neoprene necklet can be worn as is, a simple, smart black necklet.
