Rajasthan Tribal Silver kohl container, sourced in Jaipur so it probably originated in the tribal areas around that city; from around the mid-1900s.
Kohl (kajal) is a black eyeliner, much used in India and its environs. The inside of the above container still has the residue of that use – see the last image in the gallery above.
The silver chain, 51.5cms length and included in the price, is new, a slim sturdy cable chain.
Note the two plain Silver round medallions; they have been added to the chain in Sydney, just for the look of it. These two round Silver medallions are also old, also Rajasthan Tribal, and were originally two of what remained of dozens of such Silver pendants sewn onto an old shawl.
These old kohl boxes are now rare, sought by collectors both Indian and non-Indian, and are consequently costly. The above Rajasthan Tribal container is in good condition despite its age and decades of use.
