In Victorian England “message” rings were commonly gifted to loved ones: the knot ring, for example, to indicate a close personal relationship, or the wheatsheaf ring as a symbol for fertility; “mizpah” means “watchtower” in Yiddish, and signified watchfulness, a looking out for, a caring for the recipient.
