Long Silver Earrings created and handcrafted Sydney, hung with rare old Naga Carnelians of the finest quality.
The source of this AGrade Carnelian gemstone are the ancient mines of Gujerat, West India, source of the best quality Carnelian for thousands of years, supplying not only India but also the great neighbouring kingdoms of Bactria, Persia, Uzbek.
Carnelian, part of the Chalcedony crypto-crystalline family along with, for example, Onyx and Bloodstone, has forever been a favourite gemstone, for its durability and above all for its beauty, its warmth of orange-red colour.
The Carnelians in the above Long Silver Earrings were originally part of an early 1900s necklace of such handcut, barrel-shaped beads, graduated, from Nagaland, an isolated rugged area in the far north-east of India. Nagaland demographically consists of a number of tribes separated by terrain and customs, and in one particular area these barrel-shaped Carnelian necklaces were highly valued symbols of wealth and prestige.
Traders would purchase the rough at the Gujrati mines, have the gemstone cut and polished in one of the gemstone cutting centres in the area – cut in the quite particular “native” cut barrel shape – and cart the material all the way across to the other side of the sub-continent, to Nagaland, for trade.
