Gold Maltese Cross. This type of cross got its name from its adoption by the Knights of St John (Hospitallers), who had their base for centuries on the Mediterranean island of Malta. The above compact, unfussy take on this cross design was created in Sydney, to handle a nice little square gemstone such as the above “sparkler”, a very fine little bright white Diamond.
The story goes that in one of the Crusader battles the Knights had with the Saracens, they were hit by fire bombs which caused havoc, death and many bad burns. The Knights who showed bravery trying to help their stricken comrades-in-arms were afterward awarded the cross medal that became known in time as the Maltese Cross. It came to symbolise heroism, sacrifice and bravery.
