The above so-called cable link design is a plain design but attractive in its simplicity. Interestingly enough, even though this simple, robust chain form has existed, surely, since the creation of chain, when Gold chain has been excavated in digs in, e.g., Assyria and Bactria, it is not in the simple round or oval link form, but rather in more fancy workings, like the squared chevron link. The more simple “cable” linkage was not, perhaps, sufficiently prestigious for the satrap potentates of ancient times.
