Sapphire is of the Corundum crystal family, an aluminium oxide with variable trace elements trapped in the crystal at its very formation, which trace elements dictate its colour. The Corundum crystal family consists of Sapphire and Ruby. (Ruby is the pinkish-red to strong red colour in Corundum, brought about by the presence of the trace element chromium, and sometimes it can be problematic distinguishing between Pink Sapphire and Ruby.)
Any Corundum gemstone not considered Ruby is classified as Sapphire. The above Brandy Sapphire is a good example of a fine coloured Sapphire gemstone, well-cut, of good clarity and crisp colour.
