Ancient Form, Tribal Silver. The two old Silver pendants in the above earrings, each hammered, annealed and handworked from one Silver rod, were among the few left sewn onto the fringes of a very old heavily embroidered shawl, origin tribal Gujerat West India, which was once decorated with dozens of such little Silver pendant pieces, all completely handcrafted, all identical in size and form.
In India there are many Tribal areas, and some of these Tribal areas are known for very particular Silver-work; the Silver ornamentation of Orissa, on the east coast of the country, for example, is renowned for a certain primitivity of design, and for the exaggerated use of granulations. Gujerat, on the other side of the country, created and still creates Silver work which, though steeped in tradition, often seems startlingly modern.
