The design of the above 9ct Gold ring is as simple as can be: a slim round band of a sturdy 1.6mm thickness, a solid cleanly-crafted bezel setting for the 9x7mm Superfine Aquamarine; it could have been cast by machine from a wax model (if the wax model existed, which it does not, and therefore would have necessitated creating, at a not inconsiderable expense), and that could have reduced the price a little, but for such a lovely and costly gemstone the preference was for a setting handcrafted specifically for it.
In the above ring there is 2.4 grams of solid 9ct Gold. In calculating what to charge for the above ring, the Sydney bench jeweller who handcrafted it weighed the Gold to be used in the making before work beginning, and weighed what was left of that at conclusion of making; almost 0.2 grams of 9ct Gold had disappeared in the making. This is what is called in the jewellery trade “wastage”. The bench jeweller accordingly charges for 2.6 grams of 9ct Gold used, along with the hourly work rate.
