.82ct Sapphire Baguette, dimensions 6.75×3.6mm, depth 2.9mm, origin Sri Lanka, or Ceylon, as it was named in the 1980s when this interesting fine blue .82ct Sapphire gemstone was purchased in Colombo. The above .82ct Sapphire gemstone was cut in Colombo, with its source in the extensive highlands in the middle of the country.
Sapphire is sourced in many different parts of the world. Australia is a major producer, but Australia’s gemstone Sapphires, due to iron content in their crystal structure, rarely have the lighter vivid blue of gemstones such as the above. The highlands of central Sri Lanka are considered one of the best sources of high grade blue Sapphire. Kashmir blue Sapphires are said to be the finest of all, but the mines there were played out early in the last century. Certainly, when we visited Kishtwar in the mid 1970s the place was very dilapidated, remarkable to us only for its troublesome bedbugs.
The above 9ct Rose Gold setting constitutes a very large portion of the final price of this gemstone ring. The making of this ring took a skilled bench jeweller a full 31/2hours; and while its Gold content is 5grams of 9ct Rose Gold, a portion of Gold is always lost in the handmaking of such a piece. The making and the Gold content of the above ring represents around 70% of the final price.
