1950s Baltic Amber, Coral & Silver earrings. The four “butterscotch” Amber in the above earrings are from a long graduated strand cut down in length for a customer. Yellow, or “butterscotch”, and “honey” are the two basic Baltic Amber colours, the former often being opaque and the latter usually being translucent, and the combination of the two in one piece is not uncommon, and indeed is very attractive.
The yellow Amber in the above earrings is totally opaque. Every bead in the original strand was individually handcut, irregular and different, but all were opaque and in shades of butterscotch, and all cut in irregular planes.
The original strand would have been created post WW11 in one of the Baltic States; certainly not in England or Germany or Russia.
The Coral used in the above eardrops, as spacers between the Amber, is of particularly fine gemstone quality, lovely super saturated orange-red, old handcut beads from Sth India, originally of Mediterranean origin.
