Moonstone Cats Eye 9mm x 7mm oval of Sri Lankan origin. The characteristic Moonstone Cats Eye effect is pronounced in this gemstone, brought about by the way light refracts through the particular components of its crystal make-up, and shows in the shifting luminous line moving length-ways across the gemstone surface, depending on the angle of light.
The gemstone has been used since ancient times in jewellery, its enduring appreciation no doubt based on the moon-like colour and look. Its popularity surged in English Victorian times, and again in the late 1800s, in the Art Nouveau work of some of the great jewellery houses on London and Paris. Then again, in the first half of the 1900s Scandanavian jewellers of the like of Georg Jensen used it extensively in their new, modern, stylish Silver work.
The Silver ring setting for this Moonstone is created in Sydney, modeled on an English 9ct Gold ring of the 1940s.
