Natural Ruby, cabochon cut 6mm round, natural untreated translucent gemstone of fine pink-red, in a simple solid, Sydney-created pendant setting of 14ct Gold.
The above 1.17ct Natural Ruby cabochon is an unusual gemstone, for genuine Ruby, when it is of decent colour and translucency, which the above is, is only ever found, in Australia at least, in cut form, facetted. This 6mm round cabochon is the last of a small packet of five such gemstones sourced in Bangkok around 2018, and despite enquiries since, has not been repeated. This is a common story in the gemstone centres of Asia: an item once stumbled upon and appreciated is never again sighted.
Another unusual aspect of this lovely, appealing Sydney-crafted pendant, is that the setting is crafted in 14ct solid Gold. In Australia, as in England, 9ct Gold and 18ct Gold are the two Gold standards; 14ct Gold tends only to be found in far eastern markets. But 14ct Gold is a pleasing in-between our 9ct and 18ct Gold, of a solid rich colour, definitely more rich than the muted 9ct Gold tone but not quite as bright as the the high yellow of 18ct Gold.
14ct Gold mark is 585 (9ct Gold: 375; 18ct Gold: 750), meaning 58.5% pure Gold content. Note also that 14ct Gold is 18% more weighty than the same item in 9ct Gold, giving this pendant a quite noticeable heft in the hand.
