Coral Old Tibetan, of excellent saturated deep orange-red, a fine rare colour for gemstone Coral. Sourced over forty years ago from one of the Tibetan traders in Janpath New Delhi, the bead was old then, smoothly hollowed around the hole apertures from years of rubbing wear, so the title Coral Old Tibetan quite fits.
Gemstone Coral such as this is very difficult to source these days. There are only a handful of traders around the world who actually have it for sale, a few in Delhi, some Afhgani traders in Bangkok, a shop or two in the Inner Bazaar in Istanbul, and their customers for this sort of merchandise, those who seriously value gemstone Coral, are almost exclusively wealthy Asian.
It is still possible to source fine gemstone Coral in England, in graduated round bead strands, and in brooches and pendants, usually of Gold, for Victorian England of the late 1800s went through a veritable Coral craze. The source for the Victorian English Coral was the Mediterranean Sea, mainly in the environs of Sicily.
Mediterranean Coral has a long history. The Romans traded it through the Persian Gulf to South India two thousand years ago. The origin of the above old Coral bead would certainly be the Mediterranean.
Please note: Coral is an organic gemstone. The above old bead shows some parasite depredation, however the piece may be worn so as to keep those signs of nature largely to the rear.
