Late 1800s English ring design, re-created Sydney in solid 9ct White Gold.
This ring design was very popular in the Late 1800s Victorian period for its neatness and proportion, sitting up proud on the finger, its pierced upper scroll-work an elegant foundation for the gemstone setting.
The design was also popular with the bench jewellers of the period, for the pierced scrolling was worked with Gold wire, allowing for a minimal weight in Gold in relation to the surface area. However, back then all this work was done completely by hand, and unless the Gold wire in the scrolling work was sufficiently thick and robust, and unless the soldering and joining was properly crafted, these rings simply did not last and nowadays are quite rare in the Antiques market.
The above 9ct White Gold ring is not hand-worked, rather is it cast from a handmade model, cast in Gold and all of a piece, with no solderings; it is quite sturdy, much stronger than would be the case were it handmade.
