Rajasthan Tribal Silver kohl container, sourced in Jaipur so it probably originated in the tribal areas around that city; from around the mid-1900s.
Kohl (kajal) is a black eyeliner, much used in India and its environs. The inside of the above container is stained black with the residue of many years of use.
The “Eight Ladies” motif in the pressed Silver box lid is a common Rajasthani motif, having, it seems, to do with the eight milkmaids of Lord Shiva -some will say that it represents seven milkmaids with Lord Shiva himself the eighth figure.
These old kohl boxes are now rare, sought by collectors both Indian and non-Indian, and are consequently costly. The above Rajasthan Tribal container is in good condition despite its age and decades of use.
The $55 68cms sturdy slim Silver cable chain can be added to the cost of the container, and sent with the container, once the price on site has been altered to $190.00.
