Handcrafted English Antique Silver Tassel Necklace, the tassel out of the late 1800s, the elegant simple handmade Silver chain new, double-link and very supple.
Tassels were made to hang ornamentally from the fancy watch chain of a stylish English lady of the late 1800s which ran from the lady’s vest pocket, connected to the watch, to one of its button holes. It would hang near the bar which secured the chain at the button hole and would have simply dangled, a pleasant tactile little bauble to finger.
These tassels were always made of a number of identical slim chevron link lengths of chain, each ending in a soldered granule and all cleverly fixed in their cap. This very same type of tassel pendant was used extensively in Ottoman ornamentation, in jewellery and on artefacts, for hundreds of years before it began to be seen in English jewellery, and is no doubt the source of its English manifestation.
