Yemen Tribal Coral, four old beads of good solid orange-red colour, with some Tibetan turquoise and old Tribal Silver.
Up to the 1960s/1970s it was still possible to source old Yemen Tribal Coral and Tribal Silver through traders in Aden. There was a distinct sub-continental Indian influence on the Silver craftsmanship in the more fertile areas of the country, and gemstone Coral was as appreciated in Yemen as in India, with the added attraction of the Coral source, namely the Mediterranean, being, for travelling traders, close by. The four matched old reddish Corals in the above necklace would date back beyond the 1940s.
Tibet has a number of functioning Turquoise mines, most in the west of the country. Turquoise is a most favoured gemstone in that Himalayan land; it is said to promote calm and absorb anxiety. Tibetans appreciate the mix of Turquoise and Coral, and often use these two gemstones together in jewellery, in items of jewellery and in the embellishment of objects of art.
The two old Silver beads originated in the Ghazni eastern border area of Afghanistan, and the three old flattish Tribal Silver pieces are from Rajasthan.
